sports nutrition counseling

Sports Nutrition is the study and practical application of food and nutrition as it relates to athletic performance.  Proper nutrition is the most important non-athletic performance factor and is the foundation of an appropriate sports plan.  Without proper fuel and nourishment for your body, you simply will not attain your true potential and will be more susceptible to fatigue and injury.  Research shows that most injuries occur in the last 20 minutes of practice or a game when fatigue increases.  For these injuries, decreased fuel availability is one of the largest factors responsible for the onset of fatigue.  A performance coach or athletic trainer may offer you some tips and advice for improving your diet, but a consultation with a registered dietitian allows for a much more detailed analysis of your current diet and will layout a specific eating plan to help you achieve your goals.  A one-on-one consultation allows the dietitian to determine the athletes exact sport and performance goals so that a meal plan can be properly outlined.  Registered Dietitian’s that specialize in sports nutrition can formulate  a specific eating plan for you that includes diet balance, weight loss/gain needs, specific fuel choices (carbohydrate, fat and protein distributions), specific nutrient needs, race day and competition eating, and recovery nutrition.

Heather specializes in sports nutrition for the teenage population but also works with clients looking for nutritional advice for collegiate and professional sports.

Nutrition Analysis with Nutrition Plan

This package is helpful for the motivated athlete that simply needs a plan.  During the first consultation, you will discuss with Heather your medical history, diet and exercise history, your current involvement in sports, exercise and activity and your goals.  After the first consultation, you will keep a 3-7 day food log so that Heather can evaluate your current eating plan.  Based on your analysis, barriers and goals, Heather will work on a specific plan for you.  At the next consultation, Heather will review with you your analysis, including a complete assessment of your diet (see dietary analysis to review exactly what this includes), along with recommendations on how to improve  your nutrition to reach your goals.  This package is intended for a highly motivated athlete that has general knowledge of nutrition.  For athletes that need a more comprehensive plan (or need more monitoring and education), the 6-week training plan may be a better option.

6- Week Training Package

Do you have a specific goal in mind?  Do you need guidance to get you there?  Is so, the 6-week training plan is right for you.  This is an all-inclusive nutrition guidance and education program that is designed for you to reach your goals while giving you all of the tools that you need to learn how to maintain your achievements after the 6 weeks.  While the program is tailored to the specific needs of each client, this program allows for a wide range of education.  Each week, your food log will be reviewed (as appropriate) and discussed with you, your progress monitored and a different educational segment will be discussed

What happens at the initial appointment?

Your first appointment will include a comprehensive evaluation of your medical and food history, anthropometric measurements, exercise and physical activity history, goals, routines and other pertinent questionnaires.  The initial appointment gives me the opportunity to tailor the 6-week program specifically to you to make sure that you get the most out of the education sessions.

What types of things will I learn at the ed
ucational sessions?

Sessions are based on prior nutrition knowledge and vary from athlete to athlete.  Examples of some education sessions that have been used in the design of other client training plans are as follows:

  • What to do in a weight loss plateau
  • Fat loss vs. weight loss
  • Fluids and electrolytes
  • Sweat Rate calculations and meeting hydration needs to improve performance
  • Specific questions about supplements
  • High intensity vs. low intensity cardiovascular exercise and eating
  • Recovery Nutrition
  • What should I eat for back to back competitions
  • What are my recommended needs for the night before a big event
  • Meeting needs during school, practice & an event

All clients/athletes present with different goals and have a different knowledge base or  levels of education.  The key to reaching health/weight and/or performance goals is learning from the bottom up.  Many times clients have been told pieces of information that they do not understand. Things such as, "I eat organic because I heard it is good for me, " without really understand what organic means.  Other commonly heard diet behaviors are things such as "I eat more fiber because I am constipated" without understand why different fibers are important.  Giving information is the easy part; Heather's goal is that her clients understanding how food and nutrients benefit their health and performance. The knowledge is what empowers and gives the ability to carry on the healthy eating behavior long after the 6 weeks counseling sessions are over.

What if I want to continue after the 6-week session?

No problem.  Clients have the ability to sign up for another 6-week session directly following the first session.  Since the program is tailored to your specific needs, you can be sure that another 6-weeks of guidance, monitoring, motivation and education awaits.
